Blue Star Lancers

Come join the Blue Star Lancers and support students and staff who have a family member serving in the military.

Why "Blue Stars"? The name of our group was inspired by the “Blue Star” movement that began during World War I when mothers of sons serving in the military hung a blue star flag in their windows. Blue Star mothers could then find each other and support each other through difficult times.

In the fall semester, we focus first on maintaining the military memorial garden on our campus and then turn our attention to preparing and sending "care packages" to members of our Lancer family who are actively serving in the military and currently deployed. We also prepare a gift basket for the annual LHS Veterans' Breakfast in November which is hosted by the Pay-It-Forward group here at LHS.

In the spring semester, we focus first on preparing "Blue Star Bundles"  (commemorative "care packages")  to honor graduating seniors who are preparing to enter military service or a military academy. We present these to students at our spring pep rally in April.

There's another reason why April is an important month for Blue Star Lancers. Beginning in 1986, Secretary of State Casper Weinberger established April as the month of the military child to recognize youth who have a parent, sibling, or step-parent serving in our military. Across the nation each April, communities pay tribute to military families with Purple-Up! events. Why purple? Blend the green of the Army with the red of the Marines and finish with the blue of the Coast Guard, Air Force and Navy and you get PURPLE!

This year we'll be celebrating Purple-Up! during the week of April 9th - April 13th We'll be handing out purple ribbons all week - asking for a spare change donation in return. All profits from the purple ribbons will go to support our Blue Star activities throughout the year. On April 13th we're asking all of Lancer Nation to Purple Up! and show our military families just how much we care about them!

Lastly, as the weather warms and the semester nears its end, we turn our attention to maintaining the military memorial garden on our campus.
